Things To Consider While Buying Corded Jigsaw

Here are some important technical features which you must check in a corded jigsaw before buying it. Let’s take a look:

1. Power Source

Basically, there are two types of jigsaw based on the power source, namely: Corded jigsaw and Cordless jigsaw. Here, we will only discuss the first type.

Corded Jigsaws:

This jigsaw type is powered by electricity. The mobility of the jigsaw is determined by the power cord length. The tool runs when its cord is plugged in to a standard power generator or power outlet.

The tool is applicable on heavy duty tasks and for cutting different types of hard materials. The power is determined by the amperage and measured in Watts.

Almost every corded jigsaw is powerful compared to the cordless ones as the former one can withstand prolonged application.

2. Handles

The jigsaw models have two typical types of handles: Barrel Grip Handle and Top or D-handle

1. Barrel Grip Handle: In this type, the handle is placed at the back side of the tool. From this position, the user can put more force on the jigsaw blade to easily cut through the material. However, using it for a consistent period of time may cause arm-muscle strain and wrist pain.

2. Top Handle/D-handle: In this type, the jigsaw handle is located on the top of it. The ergonomic design of the handle makes it easier to operate by the user. The shape and position of the jigsaw handle enhances the comfort level, machine balance, and lessens the fatigue. Lastly, the handles are rubber padded to allow a firm grip to the user during the work.

3. Types

Mainly two types of jigsaw are most-sought by the users: Orbital Jigsaw and Straight Reciprocating Jigsaw. The only thing different in both these types is the design and motion of their blade. Plus, both are used to serve different purposes.

Orbital Jigsaw:

It is for making intricate cuts on soft metals, plastic, wood, and ceramic tiles by using the U-shank or T-shank blades (with varied blade tooth density). The orbital action of the blade is suitable for making curved, straight, or circular cuts with precision.

Orbital jigsaw is also useful  for clearing debris during the cut and lets you make quicker cuts through the material.

Straight Reciprocating Saw:

The straight reciprocating saw blade is developed with a push and pull motion design (where the blade moves to and fro). This standard tool is used for detailed work.

However, certain models come with orbital action to cut window pipes and ordinary pipes.

This jigsaw is for demolition projects and its blade is used in rip cutting; it easily cuts through masonry, wood, heavy duty steel, and other hard material. Plus, it is affordable compared to orbital jigsaws.

4. Variable Speed Adjustments

The saw tool needs to maintain a varied range of speed to cut different materials. For example; it requires an average saw speed to cut metals or harder materials, whereas wood requires much higher speed. Only a few models have a fixed speed range of about 25000 strokes/minute. But it is better to choose one that allows variable speed adjustments, like 0 to 3000 strokes/minute.

5. Vibration Reduction / Anti-vibration

Always check for an anti-vibration based jigsaw tool. It helps you cut harder materials with much accuracy. Also, performing fine cuts becomes easier with reduced vibration. Else, a continuous vibration of the tool during the work may cause fatigue. So, make sure to look for the one that has this “anti-vibration” option on it.

6. Tool-less Blade Changing System / Quick Blade Change

Most contemporary jigsaws come with a quick blade changing feature, so that you can effortlessly switch from one saw blade to another without requiring an Allen key. Also, make sure to select a jigsaw with a lever attached so as to replace a hot saw blade without touching. Just check if the blade is properly fitted in position or not, to avoid risks while operating.

Conclusion

We made efforts to give you reviews of all the corded jigsaws that we have used ourselves and also some of them borrowed from fellow woodworking friends. Though all the products profiled in the review are top rated, we would suggest you to go with Bosch JS470EB for its anti-vibration cum precision cut feature. Else, SKIL 4495-02 is also quite affordably available  in the market.
